Instant S'fard: Why this Ashkenazi Jew had to start eating rice mid-Pesach

I can't eat "regular" matzah; gluten-free oat matzah is vile-tasting; white potatoes aggravate my arthritis; and sweet potatoes aren't good for my kidney stones.

Quinoa to the rescue!  I decided to avoid all the above problems by making quinoa my main "starch" for Pesach (Passover) not only for dinner but for breakfast and lunch as well.

Um, not so fast.

I was wondering why I seemed to be running to the all-genders room much more often than usual.  This morning, it got really bad, so I consulted "Dr. Google."  It turns out that, while quinoa is super-healthy, it's also very high in fiber and is well known for causing diarrhea.  Apparently, I can eat it once a day in good health and with no ill effects, but *three* times a day is another matter!

So I'll be cooking rice tonight.

Also, quinoa is a seed that provides complete proteins.

Howard Passel , true. It's very healthy in normal quantities.

We eat it often. Also, we eat a lot of millet and buckwheat, none of which are grains.

Howard Passel , I love kasha (roasted buckwheat groats), but it's grown with wheat, so I'm out of luck for Pesach. But rice grows in patties (water-covered fields), so only the packaging is a problem.

Many years ago, I got some really wonderful tasting oat matzah. Then the factory burned down because the oven temperature has to be hotter for oats than it does for wheat. Which I guess could contribute to the awful taste. It’s a shame that the first factory isn’t producing it anymore because it tasted great.

Shirley Rabin Cohen , what a pity. The gluten-free oat matzah that I have now is fit for animal feed.😢

We also eat rice (and peanut butter) on Pesach and we’re Ashkenazi. Both of my kids are half-Dominican and Jewish and they are used to eating rice with everything. I have IBS and I have so few things I can digest without diarrhea or constipation happening. Thanks for sharing! I’ll know to stay away from that much quinoa.

Aliza M Hausman , I have IBS, too. Quinoa is great for one meal per day, but, apparently, not for more than one meal per day. I eat it all the time. Naturally, I had to learn the hard way that there's such a thing as too much quinoa.

Aliza M Hausman, unfortunately for me, both peanuts and tree nuts aggravate my kidney stones, so I have to be careful how much of them I eat. 🙁 I'm glad that they don't bother you.

Shira Salamone no issues with kidney stones yet. I really only have peanuts during Pesach. Sometimes but rarely, I’ll get peanut butter crackers.
